Hi All,
Has anyone got any tips for shooting video in caves? I'm off to france on thursday for a few days of cave diving (WooHoo!!!!) and am taking my Video rig. I've got twin 24w HIDs which I can either mount on the camera, or on buddies.
Thanks
John

Hi John
Sounds great with a cave trip to France. Video lights in a cave environment depends on the cave itself, how wide vs narrow and the color of the walls etc.
If you mount the twin 24w HIDs on the video housing you can bounce the light from the walls and roof to illuminate the general area. Play with the angle of the lights and find out what gives you the best result. If you have short arms for your lights make sure to increase the angle to avoid back scatter.
Ideally one of your team mates would carry a HID with a video reflector too.
Hope this helps and that you will have a great time down there!

Thanks for that Richard,
I have got another Video reflector that I can get my buddy to use, Is it OK for him to just have a video reflector, or would he need a second lamp for signalling?
Do you think that a Tripod will help at all, or is it best to simply hand hold the shots?
Thanks

Ideally he would have another primary light for signaling but it depends on how complexed your diving will be.
Don't use a tripod, hold the shots - will give you more freedom! You would end up doing terrible things to that tripod after one week :)

Hi All,
Just a quick note to say thanks for the tips. I've put a quick clip of one of my attempts on my website:

Let me know what you guys think. (I've got another 4 hours of footage to go through and edit :) )
Thanks

Hi John..
I'm wondering if you could make a movie from the orginal with higher resolution as I was trying to watch your movie but the resolution was really small..

Hi Martin,
I have a higher resolution version, but it's about 1.5Gb in size. I can make higher resolution versions than the QT file, but I've got nowhere to put them to be able to serve them properly.

Hi John..
Do you mean you got a uncut and uncompressed video that is 1.5GB?
I suggest you compress the movie and if it's too big then, why not cut it? :)

Hi Martin,
Yes, the uncompressed video is about 1.5Gb, I can make it any size I like, but I've still not got anywhere to serve a bigger video from. I'm in the process of editting together the rest of my tapes, and so I'll probably end up with about 45mins of footage.
