Dear all

As we all know, a lot of training hours are committed in the pursuance of goals and excellence within the DIR diving community; to achieve being the best divers we can.

It makes sense to get the most out of these committed hours!

1. Within GUE, utilizing the mnemonic GUE EDGE prepares us to be fully prepared for the dive we are about to undertake, ensuring we have considered each important point therein prior to the dive.

2. Within a military environment, the debrief is seen as the most important factor in any given operation/task. To learn from the experience fully!

3. This debrief always follows a set procedure with a beginning, middle and logical end, leaving the team in no doubt as to what went well, what went wrong and what we will be doing next time to put it right.

4. The process allows the team to evaluate all the factors without it becoming an exercise in “self defense”. To use this same process in our diving I believe would better focus debriefs at the end of our dives.

5. The military format equates in a diving arena as outlined below, conveniently in the mnemonic DIR DIVE. The designated team leader would promote discussion on the following points:

D = Did the team or individual achieve the goal of the dive?

I = If we had the opportunity to do it again what would we change and why?

R = Review the sequence of events as they happened (kiting up, getting in the water ect).

D = Deco profile that was actually done compared to the planned deco.

I = Individuals thoughts on how they thought the dive went from their perspective!

V = Video evaluation of the dive.

E = Exercises and drills to concentrate on or will be taught next time, when and where.

Thoughts anybody?

All the best

C:) :) PS

Hi Coops,

I really like this idea. Beyond the fact that it organizes the post-dive debrief to make sure all aspects are covered, it also eliminates the "attack and defend" method of summing up the dive that I have seen so many times upon teams surfacing. It also ensures everything is covered immediately with all team members present.

Have you thrown this out to Richard (I think he was an instructor of yours?)?

Best,
Dawn

Hi all

Yeas, Coops have sent this idea and backed it up with more text and information to both me and the training council for review. Good work Coops!
