View Full Version : So what's it take to dive Plura?

I have been above the Arctic circle once before in 1990 and I found it utterly captivating, even in January.
So I have a long term objective of traveling in Scandinavia and diving in Plura. I am currently Tech1 and Cave1. I plan on taking Cave2 in June of 2008.
What kind of experience do I need to dive in Plura? I don't need to be pushing any limits or anything (I know its deep). I just want to spend a few days diving there. I have alot of cool water (8-9C) diving experience but not in caves since I have only been to Mexico. My gear really isn't setup for ice diving like temps right now. I have a few dives on my short Gavin, but again none in caves.
What are the pieces of a successful "trip of a lifetime" to see the area and dive in Plura?
If anyone has a map of Plura or knows where I can buy one, that would be great.
Thanks,
Richard
The first siphon through to the air chamber in Plura is 460m long, maximum depth 34m. When I was there this summer there was a permanent T about halfway through - both routes lead through to the air chamber. There are various jumps to side tunnels, but you can of course choose to just follow the main line.
With cave 2 and suitable equipment (regs which are cold water proof and warm underclothes!) a dive through to the air chamber should be within your reach. It's also a great place to learn to scooter in a cave because you have a nice big cavern zone to play around in. Beyond the air chamber, the second siphon goes down to below -100, obviously that's much more serious.
The best time to dive is in August during the annual "week 33" diving camp (11-17 August). There will be lots of divers there, no trouble to find some buddies, good surface support, gas filling facilities and pleasant evenings around the campfire.
The week before there will be a joint meeting of the Norwegian and Swedish Speleological Federations in Burfjellet, which is maybe 60-70km from Plura in the mountains on the other side of Mo i Rana. The activities there will focus on dry caving, but it would be a fantastic way of appreciating the Norwegian mountains and again, there will be good company.
If you have more time, then I suggest you take in some wreck diving up around Narvik.
