Search and exploration project in the Baltic Sea
I am posting this to check if there is any interest for a 5 day search and exploration project on the SE coast of Sweden in the beginning of August. Diving participants should be Trimix qualified as the depths in the area are around 50 – 70m. The boat will depart from Västervik http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=v%C3%A4stervik+sweden&om=1
Västervik is situated 2.5h south of Stockholm by car and about 3h east of Gothenburg.
We will be using Ocean Discovery´s boat the “Otto”. She takes 8 trimix divers, has a cabin with toilet, cooking facilities and a top speed of 20 mph. She is equipped with side scan sonar and winch and has been responsible for the discovery of over 30 new wrecks. Read more about our side scan sonar here http://www.ocean-discovery.org/sidescan.htm (http://www.ocean-discovery.org/sidescan.htm)
We will depart from Västervik each day and conduct searches for wrecks north of Öland. We have a few hot trawl snag positions so the chances are good of finding a new wreck. The most interesting wreck to be found in the area is the “Mars”. She sank in the 16th century and was the greatest warship of her time. http://www.ocean-discovery.org/admiralslostfleet.htm (http://www.ocean-discovery.org/admiralslostfleet.htm)
Finding the Mars will be very difficult though so don´t have to high expectations.
We just received a new trawl snag position from a fisher man claiming it to be a sure wreck. The position corresponds with a known sinking of a 19th century steamer. This could be an exiting find indeed. We also have many other trawl snag positions.
There are also many good dives on previously discovered wrecks in the area. The two best ones are CF Liljevalch http://www.ocean-discovery.org/forum/showthread.php?t=142 (http://www.ocean-discovery.org/forum/showthread.php?t=142)
And M/S Humber http://www.ocean-discovery.org/forum/showthread.php?t=108 (http://www.ocean-discovery.org/forum/showthread.php?t=108)
We will search for wrecks for 1-2 days and then dive and explorer any new finds. In case we do not find any new wrecks we will dive the above wrecks so in any case there will be some exciting diving for sure.
If you are interested in participating please post your interest here. If I get enough interest I will start planning this project ASAP. The costs will be held as low as possible. 5 days of diving and side scan survey will be roughly 3000 SEK ($400), this is excluding gas costs. I can also offer discounted accommodation here www.pensionatullevi.se (http://www.pensionatullevi.se/). The cheapest accommodation option there will cost 1250 SEK ($160) for 5 days. We have gas filling with booster capabilities on site in Västervik.
