Hi all,

As a follow-up to the thread "How Common is DCI Among Us?", talking to fellow divers, and general interest, we are talking about starting a discussion forum (through the OD forum) regarding profiles and the outcomes of these profiles.

There is no real place to openly discuss profiles we are running, how we feel during and after deco, if there are any problems or what seems to be working well.

Note that this is not to be used in place of running actual tables, as we all know our physiology differs on an intrapersonal as well as interpersonal basis, in addition to dive conditions, etc.

This forum would be run on an anonymous basis. Right now we are working out the details on this, but hopefully will find the proper method to set this up soon. Not only would this protect those who may not otherwise post information due to fear of unnecessary and immature criticism, but this will also open up the possiblity of participation of several diving physiologists and hyperbaric physicians who have also expressed a desire in participating in such discussions, but normally could not due to their professional status.

The forum will also be moderated to keep all discussions on track and free of inappropriate commentary.

There is a movement towards talking more about decompression incidents and strategy, as we are all realizing we can all only look to gain from talking about these things. Right now there is so much kept in the dark, but there are so many technical dives being done in the field, that divers and researchers alike could learn an enormous amount from stepping up and talking about what exactly is occurring during these dives.

More to come soon about this subforum, which we plan to open ASAP. Any comments/suggestions/questions/criticism are welcome at this point :p

Best,
Dawn

Hello all!!

Well my first post on this board. Some may know my handle from other boards.

I like the idea of a controlled place where decompression could be discussed. As threads on this topic generally go sour amongst other discussion boards. I usually keep quite about most things.

If there was a place to conduct civil discussion about the topic I would like to participate, offer the events that have happened to me, share my ideas and thoughts and ask questions. It would great if the place was attractive enough that the brains of deco would come and share insight with average diver.

I would think it would take a certain amount of censorship and monitoring to keep everything on track, productive and civil.

Cheers!!

Kevin

Hi,

I like the idea of a discusion forum on decompression. And although I can understand that some want to be anonymous I see another problem with that. How do you weigh the information if you don't know who's behind it?

Hi Peter,

We have discussed this and think that using titles rather than names gives the reader a fair chance to weigh the information. We will use two different titles, a) Hyperbaric professional, b) Diver

Take care
Richard

Hi,

I´d highly appriciate such a forum, just to have unbiased information what the others are doing :-)

We are still working out the logistics with this right now.

Two possibilities here:

1) People register a second account with an anonymous ID.

2) We make this a closed forum so we know who is coming into the group and it is easier to keep tabs on people (also so it is a discussion group for people legitimately interested and not people who are out to beat on people to make up for their own lack of self-worth).

Any HB physicians or researchers who come in can register with a separate title. Also, anyone who is really uncomfortable about posting within this forum could set up an anonymous ID separately.

Thoughts? Input?

Thank you so much,
Dawn

I think the idea is excellent! I would go for option 2. One of the reasons starting this kind of discussion is in my eyes to try to change the attitude towards DCS and a good start is to actually invite people willing to share experiences with their own names.

Thanks to you Dawn!

My concern with anonymous ID is that as the place gets popular the jokers sneak in with spoons to stir everything up.

I don't know the software or the options. Is it possible to allow the user to select whether to post public or anonymous within the same account and limited to just one forum area?

Or some way to make the poster aware that the admin knows who is posting a message. I would think that might deter most of the pot stirrers from making undesired comments. Maybe just a heavy hand with the edit button to keep the undesired comments out.

I hope to see this come together and grow. Cheers!!

Option 2 sounds like a great idea. Must be the easiest and best way to secured it from twits and twats that just wanna mess around..

Hi Dawn,

I´d also favorite option #2, things like this are better handled with names but closed, so my experience, like Kevin says, with anonomous accounts the idiots will come in sooner or later and spoil it.

Hi Kevin,

Ultimately the forum administrator can find out who it is. I think with the closed forum, the main admin can make the effort to check who is applying to come in if the name is a little sketchy or questionable.

I don't think we can go anonymous separately in a subforum, but I have asked Ingemar to check into this as he is the top guy here :p

Right now I will work on setting up the netiquette for the forum, contact some of the HB people I know who are interested, and I hope to see this up and rolling within the next few days!

Thanks for your input and your support everyone!

Best,
Dawn

I think it can be a great resource. I think it may need to have the ever-present moderator checking in to see if people are trolling. Looking forward to learning from it.

Option 2 would be best i think. I would like to encourage people not to use anonymous accounts though. In a discussion you want to know who you are speaking to to avoid degrading posts etc. This forum have a lot of moderators so any degrading emails would quickly be removed and the user banned but it would still be nice to know who you are talking to. If you absolutely want to be anonymous and have a very good reason i would allow it. I guess i could create an account for this with the user name "anonymous diver" that anyone could use but only at this sub forum. I can set this up with in a few hours so please let me know when you want to start it Dawn.

I know that some of the specialists do require anonymity as they can´t make statements if they are not as they would be considered "official" statements from DAN, GUE, Karolinska etc. We can solve this by allowing them to register anonymous with a fake email address and i would give them an appropriate title. This will take some time for me so i would like to limit these people to those that actually need it.

Ready when you are Ingemar :)

Regarding the HB physicians and researchers, I have already sent an email out to them describing the forum and so far have had an excellent response in interest.

Once this is up and running I can send a separate email out explaining the anonymity, etc.

Sounds great Dawn. Do you want it as a sub forum to "Diving medicine" or do you want it separate? Would you like any sub forums with in the Decompression discussion forum ? If so please suggest names for these sub forums. What about the name? Should it be "Decompression discussion forum" ?

Hi Igge,

Subforum in Diving Medicine is great, as this is how you guys have set up the project closed forums thus far. "Decompression Forum" is fine, unless you have any other suggestions (or anyone else for that matter)...

As far as splitting within the forum, I would suggest keeping it simple to start and we can diversy later if needed. "Deco Profiles" and "Decompression Incidents" as subtopics.

Thank you for all of you help with this! :)

Ok i will try to set this up tonight. Be ready to get swamped with membership applications. We need more moderators to deal with this. Any takers?

Dear Dawn:

I am spank brand new here and found this website from DIR Explorers. It is good to see some friendly familiar faces. Good to see you Kevin. My humble two cents, lets make it a closed forum. I would want to be held responsible for my responses be them silly or cogent. I am a physican, and would be tickled to add to any physiology your scientific acumen.

Much warmth,

Tevis
