Does anybody have any experiance from using a SSS from Burton Electronics ? http://www.burtonelectronics.com/

It is a SSS unit based on a common echosounder, and is rather 'cheap' if you compare it to other units on the market.
As I see it, it has some downsides due to it is a one channel unit.
But it seems to present some nice data/pictures.

Anybody ?

I have no experience with this "side scan". Being a single channel unit it´s severely limited as you noted. Also it is suppled with a 100´cable. That is enough to search at about 10m depth. You need 3-5 X the water depth so to use it at 100m you would need between 300-500m cable. You will need to buy a longer cable. It says on the website that you can use it to 200´water depth. You should check what the maximum depth it is pressure tested at.

How much does it cost? It might be better to go for the new Hummingbird hull mounted side scan sonar. It reportedly produces pretty good results down to 30m, maybe down to 50m in warmer waters with not so much thermoclines. The Baltic sea is horrible for hull mounted sonars due to the thermoclines as the Swedish navy bitterly have experienced hunting Russian subs. Should work better in the winter though when the temperature is more even. With a real side scan you can get under the theromclines.

I have used the M1 system from Burton, and it works wery well! I preffere this sytem before the Sportscan I used last summer. The M1 give better pictures, and is fairly easy to tune and use.

This is what you can expect from the Burton system. I have no problem to recomend this sytem. Both because the system give very good value for money, and both the pre-sale, and the after-sales service from Garry Borton is just great!

Quite impressive pictures. Is the M1 system also singe chanell?Yes it is. Burton only delivers single channel systems now, but are working on a dual channel system, computer based. I'm looking forward to see what his system look like. I have no more info about his dual channel system.

Hi Glenn, what's the deepest that you've been able to scan with this unit and what quality were the images?
Thanks
