There have been an increase in spam over the past month. I have now taken some actions to try to limit this. New users now have to email verify their account before getting an active account. I hope this will help.

hehe, it's only getting worse - apparently this was like turning on the porch light while trying to get rid of the moths :p
If anyone has anti-spam suggestions please feel free to pass them along!
Thank you!

* Use "picture code" for verification of e-mail address
I've already suggested this once - I believe this is one of the easiest methods to implement and it's pretty hard for ordinary spammers to avoid.
Thank you for the input guys!
We will work on minimizing the junk that gets posted here, along with the invalid members
Best,
Dawn
Assuming the spammers are non-divers, what about answering a few simple questions before the registration goes through. (Then you can also weed out the noobs :D )

Why in the nine hells would you weed out noobs ? Dont they deserve knowledge as the other ones do ?
And the ideea is anyway stupid IMHO, I would most certainly not complete such a registration process and look for an alternate forums, should I be presented with a questionaire to waste my time

Hiya - on DIRX we have picture registration and also for those who slip through that net I keep an eye on the profile page - automated systems fill in the fields with silly answers like - Diving since: = Male. I delete the account immediatley.
Shame that people have to spoil the fun isn't it :(

Yeah, it is a shame  ... and rather a pain in the arse ;)
Thanks for the helpful feedback, Clare!

At first i had picture verification turned off as it makes regestering harder. I want it to be as easy as possible to register. But a few months ago i had to turn it on because of spam bots. Now i also had to turn on email verifacation as a further step. We constantly ban IP adresses from the spammers.
Interesting first post :D :D

Thank you :)
Most of the posts here (apart from the spam, of course) show a very high level of competence, so I'm feeling a bit noobish and satisfied with lurking for now.

On Ontario Diving we require the users full name and you are not allowed to log in with an alias. By deleting anyone with an alias or improper registration we have no prolems with spam and we don't have the BS arguments you find on other boards.
