Before i went to sleep last night i had this great idea, a wreck wikipedia. Anyone could add information to the wiki both undiscovered wrecks with leads to go on and already located wrecks. What do you all think of this?

Would be a nice thing to add. There are lots and lots of lists etc on diffrent sites, but why not a wreck wiki of just undiscovered ones? Or both discovered and undiscoverd.

Yeah there are a lot of lists of wrecks but the idea with a Wikipedia is that anyone could upload information. The users create the database.

Ingemar et al,
I think it's a great idea and has been tryed in various forms and foras in Denmark during the past 10 years i believe. The problem as i see it is 1. who will be the first one to "chip in" with information, marks etc, and 2. the wiki will (if data is not validated to some degree) very likely be subject to a lot of BS. My personal opinion is that the diving community only benefits from transparency and not the opposite. And indeed we have achieved a lot from exchanging info's which we did not do back in the 80's where everyone was guarding personal information with their lives. My biggest worries though are that an open source wiki (if it should contain marks as well) could or will atttract people that possible do not have the same intention as you and i (not looting, not lifting etc.) Just see in your own area what has happend to Emmy and other wrecks over years as they has become known to public. And it's same same in my region. Again i - do not want to sound paranoid or negative, generally i think it's an extremely good idea that information is distributed but i am just concerned about preservation vs. the opposite. And from our previous talks and co-operation I got the feeling that you did feel likewise.
Best regards and safe diving to all in this forum

Helou,
We have "a kind of wiki" in finland about shipwrecks, it includes both discovered and undiscovered wrecks. There are also lot of leads, from papers or fishermen. I find it very useful way to share GPS locations etc.
Is there any similar in other countries? Would be interesting to see e.g. swedish east coast wrecks.
the wreck site of finland can be found from www.hylyt.net

Hello Ingemar. "Bra" Forum you have here. Lots of hidden boards with fun projects! I like that. :D
Anyway, I run a small non commercial website called www.diving-in-norway.com (http://www.diving-in-norway.com) and we have had a good success with using Wiki for dive sites. We have connected the Forum and Wiki user Database, so only registered forum users can edit pages. We have 820 registered users.
As it stands we have maybe 120 odd sites/wrecks documented.
The dive guides are here:
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/
Here are some examples of wrecks:
Parat: 45-60m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/Parat
Begonia: 35m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/D/S_Begonia
Frankenwald: 28-45m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/Frankenwald
Helga Ferdinand: 35-60m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/Helga_Ferdinand
Saude: 41m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/Saude
Ferndale: 15-40m
http://www.diving-in-norway.com/dykkeguide/index.php/Ferndale
I think a good number of our members are actually on these boards too, I spy pretty much all the Norsk GUE members! :D
The core philosophy of wiki is the "Free sharing of information" So if you setup a wiki that covers other parts of Skandinavia, then I would be happy to give you DB access so that the info can be replicated. I hope that more and more sites will "Wiki" dive site info, and then one day we will have a great resource.
We tend to get about 6 new sites/edits a month, and it's amazing how quickly you get a great resource!
All the best

Really nice site. Seems like there is a lot of usefull information in there and i love the wreck reports. What Wiki software are you using? Could i get it integrated in the rest of the site design?
Thanks BTW for linking to us, i have noticed a lot of visitors finding us from your forum.

Yes i would hesitate to share all the positions i have. But some of them i am willing to share to the benefit of the diving community.
The most interesting thing for me would be information about undiscovered wrecks. There are many wrecks that have been forgotten, a recent example is the Graff Zeppelin, at least i did not know it existed at all until a couple of months ago when it was mentioned on the forum.

Thanks Ingemar.
We are using http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki
We also have done 2 things. 1.) Interlink the user DB to the forum DB
You can do this with your forum here:
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=112973
Then the second thing, is just to add the standard website stylesheet code to the top of the diveguides. Just to keep a standard. You can do this with CSS.
The way I see it, your site has a significant difference in that you may want "Closed groups" on certain wreck right? This should be easy using a forum bridge, as then you can give access based on membership, just like you do with your forums.
Good luck with it! :)
