Hi Dan,

Interesting blog. I have always been interested in sports psychology - from personal hang-ups I have faced when playing water polo and swimming (or in my own diving for that matter!), to professional athletics, to the general mindset of technical divers.

It seems there are a variety of reasons that people get into this sport, but I think there are just a few similar ones that keep people motivated to continue to pursue and gain experience after the "honeymoon" phase is over.

Years ago (talking 10 years or so, which is why I can't find it on the net...but would have been interesting to post here  ) I started a discussion on a dive forum regarding what makes techies tick. What fuels the drive of an explorer at heart.

In addition to a curiosity of pushing, discovering, or attempting to understand the unknown, it comes down to a similar basic drive that pushes anyone who is successful at what they do (as you have referred to in your post). Overall outlook and a perception of what they can do. What is possible.

Thanks for sharing the article :)

Best,
Dawn

Resurrect the discussion ?

Hi Dan,

We could do that, yes :p

From what I have seen, the reasons people get into the tech community vary across the board....divers simply wanting to further their education; an interest in a particular environment that requires the proper training (ie. deep wreck, cave); a desire to be with "the best"; social interaction or peer influence (I've even seen a few men/women who do this solely out of interest in meeting members of the opposite sex  ); influence from a significant other or spouse...and the list goes on.

However, after the first several years (the honeymoon phase as I've heard it referred to before)...the community filters itself out and we are left with a rather unique core of people who continue to push the envelope or participate in exploration dives.

So what drives them to step out on the edge; to maintain a high level of drive and enthusiasm towards this sport; to continue to pursue and understand the unknown?

Comments? Anyone? :)

Best,
Dawn
