These two submarines where scuttled in relatively shallow water in Greece and would make an interesting dive. I don't think that they were exploited for scrap postwar and must be relatively intact.
Does anyone have more information ? Are they already located? I have not found anything on the internet stating that they have been dived but i did not look that hard.
U-565
Badly damaged on 19 Sept, 1944 in the Mediterranean near Skaramanga, in position 37.57N, 23.40E, by US bombs.
Scuttled on 24 Sept, 1944 by three depth charges off Salamis.

U-596
Scuttled on 24 Sept, 1944 in the Mediterranean in Skaramanga Bay, near Salamis in position 37.59N, 23.34E, after being damaged by US bombs. The hull was dismantled by depth charges few days later.

The la spezia flotilla is interesting.
The mediterranean flotilla had 52 u-boats in total assigned to it (u-96 from the film Das Boot was not one of them, but u-97 was.). No one of these u-boats escaped the med. The types where viib and viic. The flotilla dismantled when the two above mentioned u-boats where scuttled. They where the last boats of the flotilla.
I have never dived in blue water (except for "blå lagunen") and if anyone wants to search these boats next year, im in. And i have no trouble looking at sidescan images for days and days (as long as there is plenty of coffe) if anyone needs a sidescan monkey.

Cool! And we still have this partially finished model of ORP Grom just waiting for your magic touch with the paintbrush. Time for a meeting ;-)

Thanks for the info Martin. The reason i am trolling for info is to try help people find new "targets" for exploration and expeditions. I am not 100% sure if these subs have been already located. Are you? If not it sure would be an exciting expedition.
Lets try use this forum to get together and gather ideas for upcoming adventures that we all have a chance to participate in. By that i mean everyone, not only "OD members". That is what i envision this forum to be. Please keep the info coming on these subs and other targets that might be of interest.

I have no idea of these subs where lifted or not. I have no idea if they have been found either. I have no idea where one would find info about it either.. Why is it that noone has written a big black book called "German Submarines that sunk, and what happened to them efterwards" with a nice list at the end of the book with all the u numbers of subs still on the ocean floor?
Probably cause there would only be a hand full of buyers.. but anyway.. 52 submarines sailed in, and no one came back. So there should at least be some left to discover.

Hi from Greece, guys. I;ve heard a lot of roumors about the remainings of an unknown Uboat wreck, in Salamis island waters. Could be one of them. But:
1. The site is a prohibited area, because of (very close) Naval base, there.
2. Additionaly, the area is protected by a special Law, as the area of ancient "naval battle of Salamis", between Athenians and Persians. They beleive that there are ancient wrecks and many artifacts hidden by the mud at the sea bottom.
3. The position of U-596 indicates a... Public Square with some buildings all around ! Not a common place for a wreck!
4. Although a diver said to me that he did a dive there (Along with a former Navy officer as a buddy) a have some back thoughts for that. But if it;s true, the depth is 25 meters and the wreck lies cutted in two pieces.
P.S. There is only one U boat (U 133) dived yet, by Costas Thoktarides, some miles SW of Salamis, at 65 meters depth. Its almost intact, heavily covered by seaplants.
If you have any questions for some wreck diving sites in Greece, send me an email at goumas@adjustlane.gr or visit www.theabyss.gr (http://www.theabyss.gr) (Sorry, its only in Greek language!) www.navy.gr (http://www.navy.gr)

Hi!
Still a submarine shipwreck that is found in Greece!
it is near in island Kefalonia!
H.M.S Perseus
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/chalcraft/sm/images/perseus.jpg
On the night of 6 December, 1941, H.M.S. PERSEUS was patrolling the surface of the Ionian Sea between the Greek islands of Kefalonia (http://www.navy.gr/hms/ENGLISH/kefalonia_en.htm) and Zante. It was a dark and windy night. Suddenly a tremendous explosion shattered the submarine from stem to stern. The submarine had hit something, probably a mine. From the crack that was caused by the collision οn the port fore side and the opened hatch of the conning tower tons of water surged into the vessel. . A few seconds later the submarine is going down in a nosedive along with sixty officers and sailors that are drifted in the cold waters of the Ionian Sea. .
